Technology, IT Projects, and the Secret Sauce

While here at Datamax we don’t believe there’s a secret sauce, we do believe in technology and think there are a few key “ingredients” that are critical to our clients’ achieving success.

IT projects don’t fail because of the information technology – and if they do it’s rare. Most IT projects fail when a company thinks they’ve found some sort of “secret sauce” of technology; as if ineffective business processes are going to magically be fixed or improved and employees will immediately be able to adapt and use the new tools. On the contrary, research from the Project Management Institute shows that changing mindsets and attitudes is viewed as the greatest barrier to new project success by 58% of people.

There aren’t many shortcuts in life, especially when it comes to changing attitudes (those of us with stubborn children can relate).

Yet we’re still shortcut-obsessed.

We always hear about the latest shortcut – that single simple action or purchase that makes our lives perfect, like that article headline that says: lose 20 lbs. in two weeks without changing your diet by doing this one thing – probably not going to work. And just like there’s no shortcut to losing weight, there’s no shortcut (or “secret sauce”) to IT project success.

The Long Road IS The Shortest Road

Too often people end up spending so much time searching for a shorter way to do the hard work – like losing weight, being more productive, or being better at a sport – that they neglect the fact (or choose to ignore) that there is no shorter way. If you want to lose weight, you have to work hard and be disciplined. If you want to be a faster runner, you have to work hard and be disciplined. If you want to be more productive – you know where I’m going with this – you have to work hard and be disciplined.

We tend to put too much faith in technology, thinking that no matter what the problem is, technology is the solution and has the power to fix our business.

There Is No Shortcut. There Is No Sauce.

Stop looking at information technology as your savior. There are companies who just want to put technology into their business with their existing processes – we know, we’ve talked to them. This is what they want because they believe that the new office equipment will solve their document workflow issues or that document management software will fix the file access problem.

But it won’t. And a shortcut to fixing it doesn’t exist.

Technology on its own does NOT create success; however, the right technology, office equipment, and processes WILL.

You create success by doing the work. You create success by taking a hard look at your processes (your printing needs, your document access needs, your network needs; either with a partner or with in-house expertise) and then applying the right mix of technology.

We Don’t Sell Secret Sauce

While here at Datamax we don’t believe there’s a secret sauce, we do believe in technology and think there are a few key “ingredients” that are critical to our clients’ achieving success.

  • Technology– There has to be the right mix of technology. Copiers, printers, document management software, network infrastructure services, and more all have to work together. And it has to be applied to address the right business problem.
  • Services– Hardware and software are the basic ingredients. In order to save time and get the right mix of technology up and running as fast as possible, you need experts who have the knowledge to help guide you in identifying your business challenges and what tools will be the best fit.
  • Customer Focused– Almost every company says they are and will be customer-focused. We actually do it. And we have the stats to back it up. We rank ourselves using the Net Promoter Score (NPS) methodology. Our NPS is 91.2. Wondering what that means? Companies with world-class service will have an NPS of 70 or over. So, it means we’re pretty good at pleasing our customers. It means we focus on you and we create a service worth raving about.

Your hard work + our help – that’s the real secret sauce.
