Coppell TX (August 14, 2023) — Datamax Inc. Vice President of Strategic Technology Justin Huffaker likens an organization’s pledge to adopt heightened cyber security practices to a successful New Year’s Resolution. It’s not a fad or a compulsive decision. It’s a long-term, hard-earned commitment.

Datamax demonstrated such a commitment by recently earning the Texas Cyberstar Certificate administered by the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR). The Cyberstar Program enhances the DIR’s goal of strengthening security in Texas “by encouraging cybersecurity best practices and promoting some of DIR's services and recommendations to public and private sector entities.”

“This certification is in recognition of organizations who are taking cybersecurity seriously, and putting steps in place to increase one’s defense against the bad actors,” Huffaker said. “Too many people are being hurt by cyber criminals, and organizations both public and private are laying out programs like this to combat that.”

Over a six-month application process, Datamax exhibited its ability to not only show best practices internally, and demonstrate policies and procedures that promoted cybersecurity awareness, but also its commitment to cybersecurity education. Huffaker and team for years have hosted cybersecurity awareness sessions to clients and prospects, and security education presentations to the general public.

"They (DIR) essentially wanted to know, what is Datamax doing to educate clients about cybersecurity? What are they doing to make themselves secure? What policies and procedures are you putting together to drive cybersecurity?" Huffaker said. "I'm starting to see more and more similar thought processes, whether you are a Department of Defense contractor, whether you are trying to obtain cyber liability insurance, or you are working with local governments... They are all asking the same questions."

The five criteria for entities seeking to obtain a Texas Cyberstar Certificate include:

  • Adopt a cybersecurity risk management program;
  • Provide appropriate training and information for employees;
  • Maintain consistency with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards for cybersecurity;
  • Incorporate public service announcements to encourage cybersecurity awareness; and
  • Coordinate with local and state governmental entities.

Datamax is currently one out of only 20 organizations (comprised of school districts, local government entities, state agencies, and private businesses) to obtain the Texas Cyberstar Certificate. For more about this program, visit the Texas DIR site here
