Datamax Cybersecurity Initiative Recognized as Texas DIR Certified Training Program

COPPELL, TX (Sept. 11, 2025) — Datamax Inc. Vice President of Strategic Technology Justin Huffaker has a hunch that, when it comes to cybersecurity training, there’s much more to be done.

His assessment is supported by the fact that, according to the 2025 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, system intrusion, social engineering, and basic web application attacks account for 96 percent of breaches. In other words, end users remain the biggest vulnerability.

Through proper training, it’s Huffaker’s mission to address and resolve that glaring vulnerability.

Datamax Inc.’s innovative cybersecurity training initiative was recently designated as an approved Certified Training Program by the State of Texas’ Department of Information Resources (DIR). This certification runs in tandem with new state legislation that requires government agencies, local government entities, and state contractors to conduct annual cybersecurity training for employees and elected officials (the training must be certified by DIR).

Huffaker says that the missing links in “typical” cybersecurity training led Datamax to rethink how it handles its program. One specific shift in the approach is taking sessions live with their clients to encourage open-ended questions, boost engagement, and avoid the “eye rolls and shoulder shrugs” that often accompany required cybersecurity training.

“What we’re doing (in the cybersecurity training space) is not enough. When I look at how the marketplace treats existing educational tools, I know they aren’t being taken seriously,” Huffaker said. “When I compare and contrast that with the live training that I and others on the team have done, I see the response the audience is having. People are paying attention. They want training that they can fully consume, and that is not mind-numbingly boring.”

Datamax’s “Cybersecurity for Businesspeople” program will unfold in a number of ways; through monthly webinars, free training that’s live and in person, and through a more robust monthly “Compliance as a Service” program.

“The question for government entities becomes: Do you want to check a box, or do you want to do better, to increase your resistance against an attack? End users continue to be the biggest vulnerability, yet we treat them as an afterthought. Technology alone cannot solve the cybersecurity problem,” Huffaker said.

The new law requires that all state and local government employees, elected officials, and certain contractors who use a computer for at least 25% of their duties complete the DIR-certified cybersecurity training each year. The training must cover security best practices for detecting, reporting, and responding to threats.
